Fractional SDR strategies for outbound
A fractional SDR has a fixed number of hours. The strategy is how to spend them. These are working principles, not benchmarks, and each one should be tested against your own results.
1. Start with a narrow list
A part-time rep reaches fewer people, so every contact should fit. A small list of well-matched companies beats a large one, and it lets the rep personalise where it counts. The ICP and list building page covers how to build it.
2. Tier the effort
Not every account deserves the same work.
- Top tier: a handful of accounts that match everything. Research each, write by hand, and use more than one channel.
- Middle: a template with a custom first line.
- Wide: a short, plain message sent in volume, only where deliverability is protected.
3. Keep sequences short and varied
A sequence is a series of touches across days. Each touch should add something, such as a different reason to reply, rather than repeat "just following up". Apollo describes a healthy reply rate for broad B2B cold email as about 3% to 6%, while other published datasets put the average lower, at about 3.4%, so plan for most contacts not to reply and judge sequences on positive replies.
4. Protect deliverability
Use sending domains separate from your main one, keep volume modest and honour opt-outs. Google defines a bulk sender as one sending 5,000 or more messages in 24 hours to personal Gmail accounts, and bulk senders have extra requirements. A part-time rep should be nowhere near that volume, but the habit of low volume helps.
5. Handle replies fast
A good reply sent late loses value. Agree who answers replies and how quickly, and who books the meeting. The KPIs page says how to count the result.
6. Review weekly and change one thing
Look at which messages, lists and channels produced held meetings. Change one variable at a time so you know what worked. One onboarding guide advises keeping the same message for about 30 days before pivoting, because patterns take time to show.

FAQ
How many touches should a sequence have?
There is no neutral figure. Providers' sequences vary. Start short, test, and extend only if later touches produce replies.
Should a fractional SDR use AI to write messages?
Tools can draft, but a person should approve. See fractional SDR vs AI SDR.
What is a good reply rate?
Published figures vary from about 3.4% to about 6%, depending on the source and the definition of a reply. Track positive replies on your own list.
