ICP and list building for a fractional SDR
A fractional SDR's hours go further on a good list. Onboarding guides say a missing ICP costs about a week before anything is written, so settle this first.
Define the ICP in writing
An ideal customer profile names the companies, not just the people:
- Company: industry, size, country, and any signal that they have the problem.
- Buyer: titles and seniority, and who else is involved in a decision.
- Disqualifiers: the companies you do not want, such as too small to pay or already served.
- Proof: which customers fit best, and why they bought.
Use your best customers as the template. If you have few customers, say so; the seed and Series A page covers what to do when the ICP is still being tested.
Build the list
- Sources: your CRM and past leads, public company directories, professional networks, and data tools. Check whether data is included in the provider's fee. See contract terms for who owns the list afterwards.
- Signals: hiring, funding, tool use or leadership changes that suggest need. Use only signals you can check.
- Size: keep the first list small enough to review by hand.
Check it before sending
- Remove customers, open deals and competitors.
- Verify email addresses with a tool before sending, as bounces harm deliverability.
- Sample a handful of accounts and ask whether you would call them yourself.
Choose the contacts
Pick the role that feels the problem, and one more above or beside them. Reaching one person at ten companies usually beats five people at two.
Keep it alive
Review the list weekly with the rep: which accounts replied, which bounced and which segments produced held meetings. Narrow toward the segments that work. See outbound strategy for how list tiers map to effort.
Back to the fractional SDR playbook. If you are hiring, start with the brief, or browse providers.
FAQ
Who builds the list, me or the SDR?
Either, but agree it. Some providers include data and list building in the fee, and some bill it separately.
How big should the first list be?
Small enough to check by hand. A first list is a test, not the whole market.
What if I do not know my ICP yet?
Start from the customers who bought fastest, and treat the first weeks as a test of which segment replies.
