Fractional SDR or fractional BDR: is there a difference?
Mostly, no. SDR (sales development representative) and BDR (business development representative) are two titles for the front end of the sales process: finding prospects, starting conversations and booking meetings for account executives. Companies split the work between the titles in different ways, and some use only one of them. When you hire someone part-time, the title on their profile tells you less than the job description you give them.
What the titles usually mean
The most common convention runs like this:
- SDR: works leads that came to you. Someone downloaded a guide, booked a demo, or signed up for a trial, and the SDR qualifies them and books the meeting.
- BDR: goes out and finds new prospects who have not raised their hand, by cold email, calls and social selling.
Some companies do the opposite, giving inbound to BDRs and outbound to SDRs. Some companies also treat one title as more junior than the other. There is no industry standard.
What this means for a fractional hire
Most people searching for a "fractional SDR" want outbound: new meetings with companies that are not already talking to you. Under the common convention, that is BDR work. In the fractional market the two titles are used loosely, and many providers use "SDR" for outbound. That is fine, as long as the brief is clear.
Write the brief around the work, not the title:
- Inbound, outbound, or both? If both, say how the hours split.
- Channels. Email only, or email plus calls and LinkedIn?
- Who they hand off to. An account executive, the founder, or a partner?
- What a qualified meeting is. Titles, company size, region, and any need or timing criteria.
- Where the work lives. Your CRM, your sending domains, your sequence tool.
A rep whose experience is mostly inbound qualification works fast on warm leads but may need time to build outbound lists and cold messaging. A rep whose experience is mostly outbound brings research and cold-calling habits but may be less used to quick inbound follow-up. Ask candidates which they have done more of.
Inbound and outbound need different setups
| Aspect | Inbound work (often called SDR) | Outbound work (often called BDR) |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Leads your marketing produced | A list the rep builds or you supply |
| Speed that matters | Response time to a new lead | Consistency over weeks of sequences |
| Main tools | CRM, routing, scheduling | Data provider, sequencing, dialler |
| Fits a part-time rep when | Lead volume is steady and predictable | Outreach can run in planned blocks of hours |
Inbound is harder to do part-time, because leads arrive at any hour and the first response tends to matter. A fractional rep covering inbound needs agreed response windows, or the work should be split so they own outbound and someone in-house picks up new inbound leads.
Pricing
Providers price SDR and BDR work the same way (retainer, per meeting, hourly or a mix), and the title does not change the quote. What changes it is the work: outbound to senior buyers costs more per meeting than inbound qualification. The compare the main outbound options page links to the cost pages.
If you are looking for an agency instead
Agencies often run SDR or BDR "programs" with several reps. The same rule applies: ask what the reps will actually do. For the difference between buying one person's time and buying a program, see an individual rep or an agency. When the brief is ready, you can line up fractional SDR and BDR providers.
FAQ
Is a fractional BDR the same as a fractional SDR?
Usually, in practice. Both titles cover finding prospects and booking meetings. Some companies use BDR for outbound and SDR for inbound, some the other way round, so brief the work rather than relying on the title.
Which one do I need for cold outreach?
Under the most common convention, cold outbound is BDR work, but many fractional providers call it SDR work. Ask for outbound experience specifically.
Can one part-time rep do inbound and outbound?
Yes, but inbound needs quick responses. Agree response windows, or keep inbound in-house and give the fractional rep outbound.
